Gayanacharya Balkrishnabuwa Ichalkarnjikar

Portrait of Gayancharya Balkrishnabuwa Ichalkarnjikar. Born: 1849 Died: 1926 Balkrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar was Pandit Antubuwa’s Guru. Balakrishnabuwa Ichalkarnjikar the BHISMACHARYA of Hindustani Classical Music introduced the Gwalior Gayaki to Maharashtra. He went further. He spread it in Maharashtra State. His disciples Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and Pandit Antubuwa among others established music schools to teach their Guru’s Gayaki to music learners. Pandit V D Paluskar travelled all over India to establish music schools. He was the founder of the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya (School of higher education). The Mahavidyalaya has several hundred branches all over India today and continues to flourish. Balakrishnabuwa’s Gayaki was simple and clean, restrained and disciplined. It was elegant but not decorative. It had the beauty of simplicity and also the majesty of a princely court. We do not have any recording of Balkrishnabuwa. But we get some idea or glimpse of what his Gayaki would have been when we observe the above features of Balkrishnabuwa’s Gayaki in the Gayaki of Antubuwa and Gajananbuwa.
